St Brigid's Day Sewing Workshop 2026
By the beginning of February we’re coming out of our winter hibernation and feeling rejuvenated enough to take on a new sewing project. The St Brigid’s Day bank holiday is the perfect excuse to get a group of women (and those who identify as) together to celebrate our femaleness and have a day of sewing and some chat. This time, we had a mother and daughter come along together, what could be more St Brigid’s Day than that.
The project was to make a slip dress, which could become a nightdress, under slip, sundress, camisole, sun top or pinafore, depending on the sewist’s preference. It was simple enough to be tackled by a complete beginner as well as those with sewing experience. Students were taught how to select the correct pattern size for their body measurements and the fit they preferred, to choose a suitable fabric, to cut out the pattern and transfer markings to the fabric pieces, to follow the pattern instructions, the sequence of garment construction and the steps to complete the piece. Needless to say, the inclusion of pockets was paramount - we need somewhere to carry our stuff!
The concentration in the studio was palpable, mistakes happened, frustrations vented, support given, admiration shared, successes celebrated and the best craic was at the ironing station.
